Winter Treasure

Once begun, this little girl would not be happy until she was completed.  Winter Treasure was completed January 22.  I have ordered some antique fabric for her clothes, but it hasn't arrived yet, so Evie lent her some clothes for her first photo shoot.

 I wanted her to look like a very old doll, one who has been loved and played with and seen many things in her life.  She really does seem like an antique doll, I am thrilled with how she turned out! After I carved Evie, I have carved about 30 other dolls, but I never thought I would carve another doll who spoke such volumes to me.
She speaks to my heart.  I think, after Evie, she is the best I have carved.

Coming along--slowly

I still have not decided how I will finish her. I love the look of a well worn, well loved wooden doll--but this wood is so pretty, it will be hard to paint it.  Well, either she will be antiqued, or she will be painted and finished very minimally--(Is that even a word??)  I ordered cherry wood pen blanks to make her arms and legs, so I have to wait until they come and see how well they match her body.

The Hazards of Cleaning!

For the past couple weeks, I have been busy moving my craft room from one room to another.  Lots of cleaning, sorting, packing up and discarding.  And today it all came to a screeching halt while I was going thru my carving things.  Why?  Because I found a doll.

Well actually, not a doll, but a PARTIAL doll that I started carving ten or more years ago.  I know this because the wood is cherry wood, and the only thing I ever had in cherry was a Hitty carving kit from Judy Brown.  Mind you, I didn't find her arms and legs, just the torso with the face started.  And when I picked her up, she spoke to me.  "Finish me".  I heard it clearly.  So in the midst of all my piles of books and fabrics and patterns and wools, I hauled out my carving stuff and started working on her.  Several hours later, I could see her sweet little face;

 As soon as I saw her like this, I felt that "connection" that we doll people sometimes feel with a doll.  I have not felt this way since I carved my precious Evie, so it came as quite a surprise.  I realized she indeed WOULD be finished, so I found some cherry wood pieces on Ebay and ordered them so she will have arms and legs that match.  Cherry is a very hard wood, much too hard for my hands, so the rest of her will be carved with my Dremel tools .  Because she is already ten or more years old, I think I will antique her.

So now I have an even bigger mess than I started with today--but somehow, I don't mind.  A new doll is coming to life in my hands, and I am very happy!

An Open Letter To the People of France

I am saddened by what has happened in your country.  And now I am ashamed that our own PRESIDENT did not see fit to stand with all the other world leaders in your show of solidarity.

Please do not let the actions of our idiot "leader" reflect on the rest of America!  MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF US STAND WITH YOU!!!!  We share your pain, your anger, and your resolve.  We are there standing shoulder to shoulder with you in your fight against terrorists, whose only mission in life is to kill.  We cry with you as you mourn those who died.  America is NOT it's president or it's government--America is its PEOPLE.   So stand strong, and know we are there beside you!!!

Are We All Stupid????

Georgia Police Chief;
"I accidentally shot my wife.
Twice.
In my sleep".

Well I don't know about YOU, but if MY husband was that big of an idiot, I sure wouldn't let him keep a loaded gun in our bed.
